Capturing first place in their categories, Home of the Sparrow volunteers from McHenry County and Palatine were honored at a recent Governor’s Home Town Awards ceremony in Springfield.
The awards were part of an annual presentation by the governor’s office to honor outstanding volunteer projects. Administered by the Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, the competition thanks recipients and hopes to inspire others to join their ranks.
Home of the Sparrow is a non-profit transitional housing program for homeless women and children that has been dependent on the efforts of volunteers since its inception in 1986.
In 1997, Home of the Sparrow opened new shelters in Crystal Lake and Palatine, while expanding the Woodstock and McHenry facilities.
