Dean looks South: Dean Foods Co. of Franklin Park agreed to buy Birmingham, Ala.-based Barber Dairies, as Dean seeks to boost distribution of its dairy products throughout the U.S. Southeast. Terms weren’t disclosed. Closely held Barber, with six dairy plants in Alabama, has about $200 million in annual sales. The purchase is expected to be completed this year. Dean had $3.29 billion in fiscal 1998 revenue. It’s the ninth purchase Dean has announced or completed this year, as it and Dallas-based Suiza Foods Corp. seek to build national networks of dairy processors.
