Grenades or bombs exploded Tuesday on three buses in Uganda, killing at least 21 people, including a child, reports said.

No one claimed responsibility for any of the blasts.

The explosions–two in southern Uganda and one in the north–appeared to have been caused by explosives hidden in stowed luggage, Capital FM radio reported.

In the worst incident, a grenade exploded on a bus traveling south from Uganda’s capital, Kampala, to the capital of Rwanda, Kigali, causing the bus to collide with a minivan, said a spokeswoman.

At least 20 people were killed in the explosion, which happened outside Mbarara, 175 miles southwest of Kampala. It was unclear whether the victims died in the explosion or in the subsequent collision, and reports on the death toll differed. The minivan driver said all 16 of his passengers died.

Grenade attacks this year in Kampala bars and restaurants have killed at least six people. The government has blamed most of the attacks on the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group, which stages attacks on western Uganda from bases inside Congo.
