District 44, Lombard

– Pleasant Lane School 3rd-grade teacher Marcy Novak spent a week this summer attending Space Discovery at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. She toured the North American Air Defense Command at Cheyenne Mountain and the Falcon Air Force Base. Novak also participated in classes on biomedical research and robotics.

District 86, Hinsdale

– Members of the School Improvement Program Community Team of Hinsdale South High School will hold their annual Community Unity Picnic at 5 p.m. Sept. 4, prior to the home football game against Oak Park-River Forest High School. The all-community cookout will be held at the north end of Hinsdale South Stadium, 7401 Clarendon Hills Rd., Darien.

– The Parent-Teacher Organization of Hinsdale Central High School will have an open house at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10, beginning with a general meeting in the school auditorium. Parents will have the opportunity to follow their child’s daily schedule, meet teachers and receive an overview of each class. Parents should bring a copy of their child’s schedule. District 89, Glen Ellyn

– The completion of construction projects for Community Consolidated School District 89 are on schedule, and the buildings will be ready for the first day of attendance, Sept. 2. Students will attend then for a half-day.

District 94, West Chicago

– Tuition-free classes that will prepare students for the GED exam will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays in Community High School. Instruction will be provided in all areas of the exam, including math, English, reading, government and science. Registration will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 2. For information, call 630-293-8164.

District 205, Elmhurst

– The 1998-99 York Community High School Pompon team took third place at the Universal Dance Association camp held at Northern Illinois University this summer. The squad received an invitation from the association to participate in its national competition in Orlando, in January.

District 502, College of DuPage

– The College of DuPage Citizenship Program helps adult immigrants prepare for the U.S. citizenship test, the written portion and the oral interview. The course is tuition-free and will begin Sept. 17. For more information, call 630-942-3697.

– Sopranos Marlene Mayer of Evanston and Janet Hackett of Forest Park will join the voice faculty of College of DuPage this fall quarter. Meyer has degrees from Viterbo College, LaCrosse, Wis., and Northwestern University, Evanston. Hackett holds degrees from Northwestern and the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. District 516, Waubonsee Community College

– Stephanie DeCicco of Bartlett has been appointed acting associate dean for communications and humanities at Waubonsee. She will provide leadership for the college’s instructional programs, curriculum development, class scheduling, faculty selection, the child-care center and the student newspaper Insight.
