Juliana Hatfield

Bed (Zoe/Rounder)

Underneath her self-loathing and frustration, Hatfield’s solo works have always revealed an unapologetic pop kick. Unfortunately, the no-frills, jangly guitars that dominate “Bed” not only fail to grasp Hatfield’s melodic potential but underpin soulless songwriting. Dogged by childish lyrics (Why did I run away?/I guess maybe I was having a bad day) and the kind of saccharine melodies that rarely stray beyond their predictable hooks, Hatfield’s grrrl power strains for credibility rather than honest storytelling.
