Happy birthday, and it’s official: Slices of birthday cake — both white and chocolate — recently were on the New Lenox Village Board’s agenda. Village officials took a break from passing ordinances to celebrate Alice Archibald’s 100th birthday with a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” and the traditional cake.

“I’m fine,” said the birthday girl when Mayor John Nowakowski inquired after her health and presented her with a proclamation in her honor. Then staffers brought in the cake and started serving an audience that included Archibald’s family and State Rep. Renee Kosel (R-New Lenox), who offered congratulations on behalf of the Illinois House.

The Village of New Lenox itself was incorporated only 50 years ago, a fact that lends itself to two views, the mayor said. “Alice just happens to be twice as old as the village, or the village is half as young as Alice.”
