As tobacco industry leaders met here Tuesday, the UN World Health Organization proposed a global treaty on tobacco control.
“Tobacco control cannot succeed solely through the efforts of individual governments,” said WHO’s chief, Gro Harlem Brundtland, at a seminar attended by anti-smoking activists and health experts.
“We need an international response to an international problem,” said the former Norwegian prime minister, adding that a treaty would address areas such as advertising and sponsorship, package labeling, international trade and harmonization of taxes.
As she spoke, hundreds of tobacco industry officials met in Geneva for a major exhibition closed to the media.
