The Georgia Baptist Convention, the second largest regional association of Southern Baptists, voted to exclude congregations that approve of homosexual behavior but to allow those using charismatic-style practices.

Most of the 2,400 representatives meeting here favored the charismatic ban, but the 61 percent support fell short of the necessary two-thirds margin. The homosexuality bill passed overwhelmingly.

On the charismatic issue, Rev. Mike Everson of Warner Robins, Ga., said Baptists needed to draw clear lines: “There are churches in the state of Georgia practicing being slain in the spirit, barking like dogs, roaring like lions. They ought not be doing this and calling themselves Baptists.”
