A blind man died Friday afternoon while apparently trying to lead his blind sister out of their burning South Side house, police said.

Firefighters found Clifton Martin, 37, and his sister, Emogine Martin, 48, in a hallway between two bedrooms on the first floor of their house in the 8600 block of South Wood Street. The sister also was dead.

The brother, who also suffered from cerebral palsy, may have become confused in the fire, said Chicago police Det. Edward Walz of the bomb and arson squad.

Police said two other women inside were helped to safety by two unidentified men who happened to be in the neighborhood. Emogine Martin’s twin sister, Margoline Martin, 48, and their aunt, Dorothy Romar, 64, were treated at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park and released.

Walz said the fire appeared to be an accident.
