A West Side man was ordered held on $500,000 bond Monday for allegedly shooting an armored car guard in both thighs at O’Hare International Airport and taking a bag containing $58,000.

Dennis Gilliam, 38, of the 600 block of North Austin Avenue, appeared before Cook County Circuit Judge John Divane, who set Gilliam’s bond for the alleged shooting and robbery of driver Daniel Wargo, 48, on Sept. 2, 1998.

Prosecutor Beth Kita said Wargo was taking the money to a currency exchange at the O’Hare Hilton Hotel when he was confronted by a robber and shot twice during a struggle with the man.

The suspect then fled down an airport concourse, Kita said, firing shots at security guards from an airport hotel.

Gilliam was arrested after one of his fingerprints was found on a book that the robber dropped as he fled, Kita said.
