Michigan State coach Tom Izzo likes the Big Ten tourney, but he would like to see it reconfigured to give the regular-season champion an edge over the teams it beat out over the last two months.
“I don’t think there’s been much advantage to being the No. 1 seed two years in a row,” Izzo said. “If you’re the No. 1 seed, you should have some advantages.”
Izzo said he would like to see the conference borrow from the Atlantic Coast Conference, which pits its regular-season champion against the last-place team on the first day. If the champ wins, it draws a bye the next day and automatically advances to the semifinals.
In the Big Ten’s format, the regular-season champ is one of five teams that receive opening-round byes.
