Residents opposed to the proposed Lakewood Falls South residential development in southwest suburban Romeoville asked trustees to vote against the project and annexation agreement in the interests of long-range responsibility.
At issue is the village’s annexation of 180 acres between Taylor and Airport Roads, adjacent to the Weslake residential development, for Lakewood Homes’ proposed single-family homes, duplex units and town homes.
Neighboring homeowners complain that the Lakewood development will create congestion, make property values plunge and revive the village’s reputation as a struggling, blue-collar town.
“It really has become an emotional issue, and it makes balancing our growth more complicated,” said Gregg Anderson, Romeoville planning director.
“If we’re also going to attract light industry and warehousing businesses, we want to see affordably priced housing.”
Those protesting the project argue that lower-priced town homes and duplex units will create a neighborhood incompatible with Wesglen and Weslake, where homes average $165,000.
