Officials from the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County said they will help the Green Oaks Village Board find a single refuse hauler that will sign an exclusive contract to provide garbage collection service to the entire village at a savings to residents.
Andrew Quigley, executive director of SWALCO, told the Village Board at a committee of the whole Wednesday night that if the board is ready to open the project up to bids by this October, the new garbage service could begin by February.
Quigley told village officials that signing a franchise agreement would almost definitely result in a financial savings for residents. For a village of Green Oaks’ size and population density, Quigley estimated that basic garbage services would cost each household $12 to $13 per month. Some trustees said they pay between $50 and $70 a month for garbage service.
The trustees also discussed a recent SWALCO survey that showed 65 of the 91 Green Oaks residents who responded supported signing a franchise agreement. Trustee Margaret Pross said that seemed to be a low number of respondents since about 1,000 households received the survey. SWALCO public information coordinator Monica Duebbert said that was actually a relatively high response rate.
Village President Tom Adams said that while the number of respondents might have been low, the village will move forward toward signing a garbage contract.
