People participating in a mock biological weapon attack had an unpleasant surprise when pepper spray was accidentally released from a sheriff’s deputy’s belt.

The spray released Saturday made attack simulators feel burning throats and cough, but did not injure anyone.

Waukesha County Sheriff William Kruziki said he grew concerned when he caught a whiff of the spray.

“We had deputies posted. They said, `Did somebody do this? Is it part of the scenario?’ I said, `I don’t know. Somebody gassed us.’ I was worried. I really was.”

Kruziki briefly wondered whether publicity about the mock attack motivated somebody to test the simulators for real.

In the mock attack, about 200 police and emergency personnel responded to a group of terrorists who took over a courthouse chamber and sprinkled hostages with anthrax powder.
