NiSource Inc., the Merrillville, Ind.-based distributor of electricity, natural gas and water, moved one step closer to finalizing its merger with Columbia Energy Group of Herndon, Va., after securing the State of Virginia’s stamp of approval for the deal on Monday. Virginia was the last of nine state governments to sign off on the agreement, which would create a powerhouse serving 4 million customers.
