The Pharcyde
Plain Rap (Delicious Vinyl/Edel America)
By injecting a playful innocence into its work, the Pharcyde established itself as one of the only credible non-gangster, Los Angeles-based hip-hop acts of the early 1990s. On its third album, that liveliness is gone, as the trio rap with little passion over a number of bland backdrops. Even the plodding “Misery” sounds too understated given its name. The group seems to simply be going through the motions on this album.
