The City Council’s committee of the whole expressed support Tuesday night for a three-story parking deck at the new Dodson Place commercial development if funding can be obtained for the nearly $8 million structure.
Three levels would allow as many as 583 parking spaces and add $2.9 million to the cost of a two-level deck, which would have about 365 spaces.
The city has a commuter-parking waiting list of 370 people. The number of daily Metra commuters boarding at Geneva has doubled since 1983, with 1,642 people commuting regularly in 1999, officials said.
J. Patrick McAtee of Metra said it would be willing to share in the cost of a parking deck. Business owners near the commuter station said a parking deck would free much-needed parking spaces for shoppers.
City staff will explore funding alternatives and report to the City Council.
