Fenwick girls basketball coach Dave Power seemed a bit relieved that Arlena Roach didn’t stand in the way of his 500th career victory Monday.

It was 13 years ago that Roach, then playing for Lourdes, scored at the buzzer to stun Power’s nationally ranked Immaculate Heart of Mary team. Now the coach at Lourdes, Roach had no such luck against the Friars on the opening night of Class AA tournament play.

Second-ranked Fenwick (29-2) rolled to a 79-40 victory over the visiting Lions to advance to the regional final of the Oak Lawn sectional.

“The 500 wins are nice,” said Power, who is 500-175 in his 24-year career that started at Proviso West. “But winning tonight was very important. If you lose, you’re out.”

Despite its lowly 15th seed, Lourdes came into the game with a 19-5 mark and Fenwick had trouble getting going, hitting only two of their first nine shots. But Fenwick simply proved too big for the Lions. Six-foot 2-inch Erin Lawless led the Friars with 17 points and nine rebounds, while 6-4 Sarah Kwasinski contributed 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

Shante Glenn’s 26 points led Lourdes.

“The goal now is to get to 507 by the end of the season,” Power said. That total would give him the state title.
