Janet Reno plans to take the first official step Tuesday toward entering the race for governor, setting up a possible matchup between the former U.S. attorney general and the president’s brother, the Associated Press has learned.
It quotes two Democratic Party sources Monday as saying Reno will open a campaign account allowing her to raise money for the gubernatorial bid.
Reno is the only potential Democratic candidate who has yet to open a campaign account. She has said she would do so only if she plans to seek the nomination.
On Monday, she said she plans to announce Tuesday whether she would seek the office. “I think you should stay tuned,” she said at a Labor Day picnic.
“People want somebody who will lead with independence, with strength, who will work hard for what is important,” Reno told supporters.
Opinon polls have shown Reno, 63, beating other Democrats seeking the nomination but losing to Gov. Jeb Bush.
