The Seattle Mariners acquired third baseman Jeff Cirillo from the Colorado Rockies on Saturday for reliever Jose Paniagua and pitching prospects Dennis Stark and Brian Fuentes.

Cirillo, 32, hit .312 with a career-high 17 home runs and 83 RBIs last season. He led all third basemen with a .982 fielding percentage.

– The Cleveland Indians have reached a preliminary agreement with free agent Ricky Gutierrez, two sources familiar with the negotiations said. The signing is expected to be announced Monday.

Gutierrez, a shortstop for the Cubs last season, would get a three-year deal worth about $11.5 million and would play second base alongside shortstop Omar Vizquel.

Last season he hit .290 with 10 home runs, 66 RBIs and 76 runs.

– The Boston Red Sox acquired right-hander Dustin Hermanson from the St. Louis Cardinals for three minor-leaguers: outfielder Rick Asadoorian and first basemen Luis Garcia and Dustin Brisson.

Hermanson, 28, was 14-13 with a 4.45 ERA last season.

– Former major-league manager Whitey Herzog, 70, won’t be joining the Boston Red Sox as a bench coach. The Red Sox sought the former St. Louis and Kansas City manager to work alongside manager Joe Kerrigan. But Herzog has declined.
