Sara S. Huter, 78, of Elgin, a retired elementary school teacher, died of complications from emphysema Thursday, Feb. 21, at Manor Care Health Services, Elgin. Born in Chicago, Mrs. Huter was raised in Palatine, where she graduated from Palatine Township High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1945. After raising her family, Mrs. Huter went to work as an elementary school teacher in Community Consolidated District 15 in Palatine for a few years during the mid-1960s before taking a teaching position with Barrington School District 220. She was a 2nd-grade teacher at North Barrington Elementary School for more than 15 years before she retired in the mid-1980s. During retirement, she volunteered in the library at Hunting Ridge Elementary School in Palatine. She also was active in St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, where she was a board member. “She was a very generous and caring person,” said her daughter Elizabeth Deskins. “She enjoyed people and she loved children, and that’s why she was a teacher.” Other survivors include two more daughters, Teresa Cichantk and Margaret Simpson; a son, David; a sister, Suzanne Mauntel; a brother, Roger Smith; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday in Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 342 E. Wood St., Palatine.
