Crime in the city is going down, even though the ratio of officers to residents has decreased in recent years, according to a report recently presented to the City Council.
In 2001 the city experienced 397 crimes, down 19.5 percent from 1999 and 17.5 percent from 2000, the report said. Most crimes were thefts and burglaries.
In December Geneva had 35 police officers and a population of 20,950, with a ratio of 1.78 officers for every 1,000 residents. That’s down from 1.8 officers per 1,000 residents in 1990, the report shows. By contrast, Batavia has 42 officers and 23,866 residents for a ratio of 1.76, and St. Charles has 52 officers with 27,896 residents for a ratio of 1.86.
