Self-help hip-hop? That’s essentially what this pioneering Bronx rapper offers with his 10th album, a powerful collection that relies on Bible passages for many of its themes. Full of positive messages and anti-materialist pleas, KRS One campaigns for self-confidence, mental strength and character development, themes that also propelled his last album, the spectacular “Sneak Attack.” For the most part, the former Boogie Down Productions leader drives home his message effectively, dishing out advice like a concerned uncle. Sometimes, however, the lukewarm production and KRS One’s non-stop preaching dilute the enjoyment.
