Now that the high school basketball season is over, all-star games crop up like weeds.
In addition to the EA Roundball Classic on Tuesday night at the United Center and the McDonald’s All-American Game at Madison Square Garden on April 4, , there are many others.
– Five Illinois basketball stars will be in action April 11 during the Jordan Brand Capital Classic basketball games at the MCI Center in Washington. Rick Cornett of Homewood Christian will play for the U.S. All-Stars against the Capital All-Stars in the regional game. Then Dee Brown of Proviso East, Aaron Spears of Dunbar, Michael Thompson of Providence and Andre Iguodala of Springfield Lanphier will play in the national game.
– The East-West UPS All-Star Shootout April 7 at Elgin Community College will feature about 70 of the top senior boys and girls players in the north and northwest suburbs. Playing in the girls game will be All-State picks Lindsay Richards of Barrington and Kari Embree of Wheeling, plus Patti Hornung of state semifinalist Lake Zurich. Schaumburg’s Tony Young, Stevenson’s Greg Zimny and Bartlett’s Anthony Maestranzi are among the boys headliners. Call 847-214-7552.

Rocking the ‘House: Westinghouse’s newly crowned state champions will play Westinghouse’s 2000 state runners-up at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the school. The 2000 team features UIC stars Martell Bailey and Cedrick Banks, plus Dennis Trammel and Craig Franklin. David Bailey, a former Warrior and current Loyola University standout, will be honorary coach. Admission is $1.
Honors: Former Gordon Tech football coach and Leo alum Tom Winiecki has been named Chicago Catholic League “Man of the Year” and will be honored at the league’s 42nd annual Hall of Fame dinner May 2 at the Skyline West Banquet Hall in Berwyn. The league will induct 12 new members into its hall. Hockey report: After being eliminated by Fenwick in the Blackhawk Cup Red Division state semifinals, Loyola Gold returned the favor by defeating the Friars 4-2 last weekend to sweep the Catholic League’s Kennedy Cup championship series. In the Blackhawk Cup combined varsity final, Rockford defeated Niles in a meeting of the division’s top two seeds to win its fifth straight title. For the junior varsity title, Loyola defeated Marist 3-2 in double overtime on a goal by Michael LaCalamita.
– The Chicago Blackhawk Alumni Association recently announced its 2002 Alumni Scholarship winners, bringing the total number of awards to 50 in the program’s 15-year history.
