Orland Park

The Southwest Cook County Cooperative Association for Special Education, Eisenhower Cooperative and Orland School District 135 are the recipients of an Individuals with Disabilities Education Act supplemental activities grant from the Illinois State Board of Education. The $186,945 grant will be used to assist students with special needs in meeting the Illinois learning standards. The collective partnership among the three entities represents more than 55,000 students ages 3 to 21 years in 23 school districts.

Plainfield

The family of Richard G. Schleeter, former principal of Central Elementary School, has established a memorial scholarship to encourage students to enter the field of education. Family members will select the $500 scholarship winner based on submission of letters of recommendation, an essay and documented community service working with youths. Applications are available to graduating seniors from Plainfield School District 202 who attended Central Elementary School for at least one year and plan to major in education. The deadline for applications is May 3. For information, call 815-577-4008.

South Holland

Katie Skorpinski, a senior at Thornwood High School, recently won the grand prize in U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s “An Artistic Discovery 2002” annual high school art competition held at Prairie State College. Skorpinski’s winning pencil drawing titled “Senses Detached” will be sent to Washington, D.C., and placed on display in the Cannon Tunnel at the Capitol for one year. She was awarded a trip for two to Washington. Forty-five students from 10 area high schools competed in the event.

Tinley Park

Andrew High School’s Symphonic and Concert Band, under the direction of Daniel Romano, will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gym, 9001 W. 171st St. Also performing will be Kirby School District 140’s Concert Band. For information, call 708-532-7300.Southwest school notes
