Indian police opened fire to break up clashes between Hindus and Muslims, killing one man and wounding five, as fresh violence erupted in western Gujarat state, officials said Saturday.

The clashes late Friday in the industrial town of Baroda, 43 miles south off Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s main city, were triggered by a false rumor that a Hindu temple had been attacked by Muslims, authorities reported.

Hindus and Muslims threw stones at each other and “police had to open fire at the rioting crowd to restore order,” an officer said. One person who suffered bullet wounds died early Saturday.
