The memorial honoring Naperville native U.S. Navy Cmdr. Dan Shanower and those who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks received another contribution.
The Tellabs Foundation contributed a $10,000 to Naperville, boosting fundraisers even closer to their goal of $150,000 for the memorial. In April, organizers reported that they had received about $100,000.
The City Council also approved a resolution authorizing the city manager to accept donations for the memorial and direct them to a designated account.
The memorial has received more than 400 contributions ranging from $5 to $25,000.
The memorial will be between the Riverwalk and Naperville City Hall. It will be assembled mostly by volunteers.
Shanower, 40, was a graduate of Naperville Central High School who died in the Pentagon when it was struck by a hijacked airliner.
The memorial will include hundreds of faces created by Naperville pupils symbolizing the casualties of Sept. 11. These will be molded onto the surface of a 70-foot-long retaining wall around the memorial. Stone tablets at the foot of a staircase bisecting the wall and leading up to the memorial will describe the events of Sept. 11. At the center of the memorial, artwork will incorporate items from the Pentagon, the World Trade Center, and the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 crashed.
The memorial also will feature remembrances of Shanower.
