The Naperville Sunrise Rotary Club wants to attract enough bike enthusiasts to raise $10,000 for DuPage Public Action to Deliver Shelter.
The organization is holding its annual Rotary Ride on Aug. 4, offering cyclists the opportunity to bike scenic routes of 75, 50, 25 or 10 miles from the starting point at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville. The longest routes go into Kendall County, while a 10-mile route has been added for the first time to appeal to younger riders.
“We attract a good group of cyclists from the city, who come out to enjoy the scenery, the marked routes and our rest stops,” said Steve Essig of Naperville, a Rotary Club member who is co-chairing the event.
The club also operates support vehicles to assist riders who need help along the way.
Members of Sunrise Rotary staff a PADS site each month at Community United Methodist Church in Naperville. The club chose PADS as the beneficiary of this year’s ride because members learned that demand for services is up 30 percent over last year.
“The smaller not-for-profits have really been hurt since 9/11,” Essig said.
Advance registration is $18 per person. After Saturday, it is $20. Registration on Aug. 4 begins at 6:30 a.m., and riders can start between 7 and 10 a.m. For more information or to register, go to www.napervillerotary.com.
