The City Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that would ban the use of motorized scooters by unlicensed teens.

A final vote is expected Oct. 21. The ordinance, backed Monday, would restrict the use of motorized scooters to licensed drivers 16 and older and would ban such vehicles from public sidewalks. Fines would range from $100 to $500.

Ald. Michael MaRous said his research turned up no accidents involving motorized scooters in the city over the last four years.

“What do we legislate next?” MaRous said. “Walking? Bicycles? Rollerblades?”
