Playoff result: Won Stanley Cup.

St. Louis Blues

Coach: Joel Quenneville.

2001-02 record: 43-27-8-4, 98 points.

Playoff result: Lost second round.

Playoff result: Lost in first round.

Key additions: RW Theo Fleury, LW Sergei Berezin, D Nathan Dempsey, D Jason Strudwick.

Outlook: Fleury’s suspension deals blow to proposed scoring line of Fleury, Berezin and Alex Zhamnov.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Coach: Dave King.

2001-02 record: 22-47-8-5, 57 points.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key additions: C Andrew Cassels, D Luke Richardson, LW Rick Nash.

Nashville Predators

Coach: Barry Trotz.

2001-02 record: 28-41-13-0, 69 points.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key additions: LW Brent Gilchrist, C Pascal Trepanier.

Outlook: The Predators raised season-ticket prices and offered a refund on the increase if they don’t make the playoffs. They’d better keep the money handy.

NORTHWEST DIVISION

Colorado Avalanche

Coach: Bob Hartley.

2001-02 record: 45-28-8-1, 99 points.

Playoff result: Lost in third round.

Key addition: D Derek Morris.

Outlook: One of the few teams that can trade a player like Chris Drury and not miss a beat. Morris is a future Norris Trophy winner.

Edmonton Oilers

Coach: Craig MacTavish.

2001-02 record: 38-28-12-4, 92 points.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key addition: C Jiri Dopita.

2001-02 record: 26-35-12-9, 73 points.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Coach: Darryl Sutter.

2001-02 record: 44-27-8-3, 99 points.

Playoff result: Lost in second round.

Coach: Mike Babcock.

2001-02 record: 29-42-8-3, 69 points.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key additions: C Adam Oates, RW Petr Sykora.

Eastern Conference

ATLANTIC DIVISION

Philadelphia Flyers

Coach: Ken Hitchcock.

2001-02 record: 42-27-10-3, 97 points.

Playoff result: Lost first round.

Key additions: G Robert Esche, C Michal Handzus.

Playoff result: Lost first round.

Key additions: LW Jeff Friesen, D Oleg Tverdovsky.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key addition: C Alexandre Daigle.

Outlook: Cash-strapped Penguins couldn’t do much in off-season but wave players goodbye. Part-owner Mario Lemieux will have to turn back clock to early 1990s to sniff postseason.

NORTHEAST DIVISION

Montreal Canadiens

Coach: Michel Therrien.

2001-02 record: 36-31-12-3, 87 points.

Playoff result: Lost second round.

Key addition: RW Mariusz Czerkawski.

Playoff result: Lost conference final.

Key additions: G Ed Belfour, D Robert Svehla, RW Tom Fitzgerald.

2001-02 record: 36-33-11-2, 85 points.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key addition: C Robert Lang, W Mike Grier.

Outlook: New coach Cassidy will try to get along with Jaromir Jagr and Lang by letting them run loose. Too much talent not to contend, but injuries always plagued franchise.

Carolina Hurricanes

Coach: Paul Maurice.

2001-02 record: 35-26-16-5, 91 points.

Playoff result: Lost Stanley Cup final.

Playoff result: Did not qualify.

Key additions: LW Shawn McEachern,
