Despite their 95-loss season, the Cubs have announced a ticket-price increase of 20 to 25 percent for nearly one-fourth of their home games in 2003.

In a letter mailed to season ticket-holders this week, the Cubs introduced a three-tiered pricing system, dividing their 81 home games into value dates (8 games), regular dates (54 games) and prime dates (19 games).

Value dates are Mondays through Thursdays April 9 to May 7; prime dates are Opening Day and weekends from June 6 to Aug. 17; regular dates are all the other games.

In essence, the Cubs are raising prices for six series at Wrigley Field–the weekend dates during the summer months.

The list includes games against the New York Yankees (June 6 to 8), the White Sox (June 20 to 22), the St. Louis Cardinals (July 4 to 6), the Atlanta Braves (July 11 to 13), the Arizona Diamondbacks (Aug. 1 to 3) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (Aug. 15 to 17).

The letter also suggests “the future is bright” for the Cubs, mentioning the “leadership of Jim Hendry and Dusty Baker, our young pitching staff, respected minor-league prospects, and, of course, Sammy.”

The Cubs last year had an average ticket price of $24.05, placing them fourth in the major leagues.
