Detectives have matched at least three unsolved rapes to a 19-year-old South Side man caught attempting to flee after an alleged rape and robbery earlier this month, police said Wednesday.
Marvin Hampton, of the 8100 block of South Cornell Avenue, has been in police custody since he was arrested Nov. 10, immediately after he allegedly raped and robbed a woman. He was already being held on $200,000 bond at the Cook County Jail before police connected him to other sexual assaults.
By going through unsolved cases in the last two weeks Detectives Jeffrey Roberts and Jennifer Ghoston were able to seek charges against Hampton in three other rapes. A fourth rape also fits the pattern, Roberts said, but police are waiting to talk to the victim.
Hampton is now charged with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault. The charges were filed as “aggravated” crimes because the rapes took place as part of another violent crime, armed robbery, Roberts said.
