Ron Sexsmith

Cobblestone Runway

Some songwriters need to struggle for brilliance. Ron Sexsmith, on the other hand, would have to work overtime to come up with a clunker, because his sad-sack ruminations on love and life are so consistent. “Cobblestone Runway,” his fifth album, features still more of his unfailing, gorgeous neo-folk, all sung with that plaintive, soulful, sorrowful voice of his, which channels conviction and grace. Granted, the disco experiment “Dragonfly on Bay Street” could throw his fans for a loop, but songs such as the hymn-like “God Loves Everyone” and “These Days” ratify the quiet Canadian’s unerring dedication to craft, melody and sensitivity.
