A man with residences in Chicago and Evanston turned over 47 guns to police after he was arrested for heroin possession and a search of his homes turned up dozens of weapons.
After John O’Connell, 47, was involved in an auto accident Wednesday afternoon, police found a small amount of heroin and 1,000 rounds of ammunition in his car, police said. They arrested him and he gave police consent to search his residences in the 5500 block of North Sheridan Road in Chicago and the 1400 block of Ridge Avenue in Evanston, where officers found the guns.
O’Connell owned the guns legally and was not forced to give them up but decided to turn them in voluntarily, police spokesman Sgt. Robert Cargie said Thursday. O’Connell was charged with one count of felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
