Russian high jumper Valery Brumel, a 1964 Olympic high jump champion and world record-holder for the Soviet Union, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 60. In 1963 Brumel cleared 7 feet 5 3/4 inches, a record that stood until 1971.

– United States soccer coach April Heinrichs saved top scorers Tiffeny Milbrett and Heather O’Reilly for the second half, but they were unable to spark a rally and the U.S. lost to China 2-0 in the Four Nations Tournament in Shanghai. Germany tied Norway 2-2. The U.S. is 0-1-1 in the round-robin tournament featuring the top four women’s teams.

– American Lindsay Benko set a world record in the 400-meter freestyle at the short-course swimming World Cup in Berlin, finishing in 3 minutes 59.53 seconds. She broke the record of 4:00.03 set by Costa Rica’s Claudia Poll in 1997.
