S. Arthur Spiegel, the federal judge who in 1990 sent Pete Rose to prison for five months, says the banned former star belongs in the Hall of Fame “for his accomplishments on the field.”
The career hits leader is in tax trouble with the federal government again. Rose owes $151,689 in federal taxes from 1998. The IRS has filed a lien on a home he owns in suburban Los Angeles, property tax records show.
– Five-time All-Star Andres Galarraga, 41, signed a minor-league contract with the NL champion San Francisco Giants, for whom he played in 2001. He hit .260 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs for Montreal last year, starting 72 games at first base.
– Jeff Suppan, a right-handed starter who won 39 games the last four seasons with the Kansas City Royals, agreed to a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates that guarantees him $1 million.
