1. Signing day
Hundreds of high school football players made their choice and gave the college of their choosing a rose. And they all accepted. (Sorry. It’s hard to escape.)
2. Manning overboard
Danny Manning, who hasn’t played since averaging 4 points for Dallas last year, signed with Detroit. “He’s the kind of player who can walk in and still contribute,” said coach Rick Carlisle. At 36, you can’t really expect him to run in.
3. Lefty goes clubbing
Phil Mickelson says Tiger Woods’ equipment is subpar to his, but Tiger’s the one with 8 majors, while Mickelson is holding steady at zero. If you can’t beat the guy, beat up his sponsor?
4. What about tradition?

5. Show him the way
Pete Sampras pulled out of next week’s tournament in San Jose, delaying his return. His brother said Sampras is “still searching for reasons to come back.” Two little words: French. Open.
SIXTH MAN
6. Absolutely, positively has to be here
New Lions coach Steve Mariucci: “I am committed to delivering the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit a championship football team.” He then called FedEx to see how much it would cost to ship the Buccaneers overnight.
