The Rolling Meadows City Council agreed Tuesday to designate all city-owned public buildings smoke-free. People found violating the ordinance could face fines of $50 to $500.

However, some smoking areas for employees will be designated. Originally, the council was considering making only City Hall non-smoking in its entirety. But Ald. John D’Astice argued it would be discriminatory to City Hall employees to focus on one public building.

Dr. Arvind Goyal, who heads the city’s Tobacco Information and Prevention Program, praised the decision.

“It sends a clear message that Rolling Meadows cares for its citizens,” he said.
