A Vernon Hills man who slashed his estranged wife’s throat with a knife received a 12-year prison term Friday in Lake County Circuit Court for attempted murder.

Associate Judge John T. Phillips imposed the sentence after John Dollenmaier, 54, of the 400 block of Tanglewood Court, apologized for the Aug. 14 attack.

“As a kid, I couldn’t understand how men beat their wives. With drugs, alcohol and depression, I became that man. I’m just so sorry I did what I did,” Dollenmaier said.

Dollenmaier pleaded guilty March 5 to the attack on his estranged wife, Kimberly, 36, after he broke into her Mundelein home.
