2. Bishop arrested in deadly hit-and-run
The Roman Catholic bishop of Phoenix was arrested Monday in a deadly hit-and-run accident after police traced a license plate number to his car and found the windshield caved in. Police said Bishop Thomas O’Brien would be charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
3. PETERSON’S GAG REFLEX: The lawyer for accused double-murderer Scott Peterson asked a court Monday in San Francisco to lift a gag order on lawyers in the case, saying it unfairly deprived him of the right to present his client’s side to the public. A judge imposed the gag order Thursday, saying leaks to the media would make it very difficult to find an impartial jury.
4. KIDNEY DENIED: Oregon has denied a kidney transplant to a Death Row inmate in the hopes of ending a statewide debate about how best to keep him alive until he is executed, state officials said Monday.
5. RENT CONTROL IN PERIL: Gov. George Pataki approved a second one-day extension for New York state’s rent control law Monday. At issue is whether to decrease the number of apartments statewide that have controlled or stabilized rents.
