Palestinians greeted a sudden Israeli military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip with relief Monday, but fury at the destruction wreaked by two years of incursions was undiminished.

“[Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon only left Beit Hanoun after he destroyed it,” a woman said of her hometown near the northern Gaza boundary with Israel.

Israeli armored vehicles rumbled out of town late Sunday, ending an occupation that began more than a month ago to put a stop to cross-border rocket attacks on Israeli towns.
