An estimated 4,000 people spent a recent Sunday celebrating the completion of the $18.5 million renovation of the Skokie Public Library, including a new third floor, officials said.
“We really added a ton of new space,” said library spokeswoman Tracy Shields-O’Reilly, who helped organize the daylong event, featuring dancers, musicians and magicians.
The library, which opened in 1941, underwent a renovation in 1970, including construction of its second floor.
But it needed to add space with the popularity of audio and video equipment among patrons.
“We have a whole new section for audiovisual equipment, which represents 31 percent of our circulation,” Shields-O’Reilly said.
