With a sit-down lawnmower that can hit 95 miles an hour, Al Bitterman is pretty sure he can cut the grass around his lawnmower-repair shop in Wilmette faster than just about anyone.
Bitterman mowed down the competition when he won the national championship last month in the stock class at the lawnmower-racing championships in Mansfield, Ohio.
His next race is Saturday in Fox Lake.
Bitterman, 42, of Lake Zurich has been racing lawnmowers for eight years. His racer is a 40-horsepower Toro built in 1978. He enjoys tinkering with it at his shop on Old Glenview Road in Wilmette.
“I do everything myself. I drive. I’m the mechanic, and I’m the pit crew. I’m a one-man team,” Bitterman said.
