Stormy weather in Antarctica kept two planes grounded for a second straight day Tuesday, further delaying an attempt to rescue a seriously ill researcher stuck at the South Pole.
The ailing worker, stationed at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, has bladder problems that could require surgery.
The storm arrived Monday with snow and wind blowing at more than 50 m.p.h.
“In fact, it got worse,” said Steve Penikett, general manager of the Kenn Borek Air charter company of Calgary, Alberta, which sent two planes to attempt a rescue.
The temperature at Amundsen-Scott was 93 below zero Monday. The sun, which set in March for the Antarctic winter, will rise again next week.
Penikett wasn’t sure when the flight could resume.
