Higginson suspended, fined
Detroit Tigers outfielder Bobby Higginson was suspended Tuesday for the second time this season following his ejection from a game. Higginson, who was also fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball, will not appeal, the Tigers said. He sat out Tuesday and will sit out Wednesday in Kansas City.
Higginson missed two games earlier in September following his ejection from an Aug. 10 game against Minnesota.
Warning led to Halladay ejection
Steve Palermo of the commissioner’s office warned umpires working the Tampa Bay-Toronto series to watch for beanballs, leading to two ejections so far.
Halladay was ejected in the sixth inning Monday night after hitting Devil Rays rookie Rocco Baldelli with a pitch. On Tuesday night, Josh Towers was ejected for throwing behind Huff.
“It stems from last year,” Palermo, a supervisor of major league umpires, said Tuesday.
On June 6 last season, Tampa Bay’s Aubrey Huff was hit on the helmet by Toronto’s Luke Prokopec after hitting a home run in his previous at-bat.
“We take that seriously,” Palermo said.
