A good friend lamented over the slanted reporting on Opus Dei in the Sunday Tribune. He raised the point that the article was anything but balanced since it highlighted the negative reactions of a few people who have left Opus Dei compared to the positive experiences of thousands of people in the Chicago metropolitan area.

What is especially disturbing is that any reader unfamiliar with Opus Dei may unwittingly view this institution of the Catholic Church as something sinister and dangerous. It is truly unfortunate that people who could benefit in some way from the formative activities of Opus may shy away on account of the poor impression the written piece leaves. Just for the record, here in Chicago, scores of people have been flocking these days to St. Mary of the Angels Church (entrusted to priests of the Prelature of Opus Dei) from all over the Chicago area for their annual Novena to the Immaculate Conception. The present cardinal, as well as his predecessor, has been very supportive of Opus Dei’s apostolates, especially those involving St. Mary of the Angels Church. Thousands of inner-city children have received a new lease on life through their participation in the educational and formative programs inspired by Opus Dei. Thousands of people all over the metropolitan area are extremely pleased with the spiritual assistance Opus Dei has offered them.
