A Mundelein man pleaded guilty last week to four counts of reckless homicide for plowing his pickup into a mini-van in March 2002 south of far north suburban Richmond, killing four Wisconsin residents.
David Malin, 34, faces 24 years in prison at his sentencing April 13 before McHenry County Circuit Judge Ward Arnold, according to chief prosecutor James McAuliff. Malin remains free on $100,000 bail.
The March 16 crash happened at U.S. Highway 12 and Kuhn Road. Killed were Bruce Thieme, 49, of Burlington, Wis.; his wife Lynn, 45; their daughter Stephanie, 17; and the daughter’s friend Renee Kleemann, 16, of Lyons, Wis. They were returning home from Las Vegas.
Malin, who was hospitalized for 10 days after the crash, was arrested May 23, 2002, at his home by Richmond police.
His trial had been scheduled to begin Monday.
