About 300 parking violators got a $2,004 shock in the mail recently.
Thanks to a computer error, the parking violators received letters from the University of Wisconsin in Madison informing them they owed $2,004 for each past-due ticket.
One motorist got a bill for $4,008 for two violations, said Lance Lunsway, head of UW-Madison transportation services.
The letter, postmarked Jan. 21, said the university would suspend vehicle registration in three days for people who don’t pay their fine by Jan. 20.
Lunsway said the university won’t suspend registrations based on the letter and is sending out new letters with the correct amounts.
