Aborigines rioted near the center of Sydney until early Monday after the death of a teenager, hurling Molotov cocktails and bricks at police in a nine-hour battle.

Dozens of police officers were injured in one of the worst outbreaks of civil unrest in Sydney in at least a decade. It was not clear how many Aborigines were injured in the rioting in a suburb called The Block.

The riot was triggered by the death of Thomas Hickey, 17, an Aborigine who was impaled on a metal fence after falling from his bicycle Saturday. He died in the hospital Sunday.

His mother said her son was being pursued by police. Police said officers had merely passed by the boy who then sped off, losing control of his bike.
