An employee of the Elgin Sweeper Co. was killed Sunday when the street-sweeping vehicle he was test-driving went off the road, rolled over and struck a utility pole, Elgin police said.
The driver, Norman L. Todd, 63, of Elgin, apparently had a heart attack and the vehicle veered off the road, Kane County Coroner Chuck West said Monday. Todd died at the scene.
Lt. Paul McCurtin said Todd was driving the new sweeper north on Gifford Road north of Gasket Drive about 4:30 p.m. when it rolled over onto its passenger side.
The accident took place not far from Elgin Sweeper’s headquarters at 1300 Bartlett Rd.
Todd worked for the company for about 26 years, said Thomas White, vice president of sweeper products.
He was testing the vehicle Sunday because the roads were clear of snow and the weather was favorable, White said.
“The company is deeply saddened by his death,” he said.
